| Getting The Most From Your College Experience |
|
|
Some people may tell you that you are about to experience the best time
of your life if you are entering the first year of university study.
Your college experience has a profound effect on the rest of your
professional and personal life.
College is a time to make lifelong
friendships, establish career connections and create your professional
identity. If you want to get a head start, you have to use your college
experience to its greatest potential.
We would usually enter our college years with a solid plan for our future. We know what we want to do as a career professional and we know what specific steps are necessary to reach our goals.
However, some people have no real direction, and the only plan they have is to find a major that they like. If you have no specific goals but you can easily manage your four years gracefully, your college experience will still be memorable.
The first step to finding a major that will suit you is by taking the classes that appeal to you. I started my college career as a communication major but I graduated with a Liberal arts degree.
My entire outlook on my university studies changed when I took a poetry writing workshop. I was able to find my niche and settled right in without much thought. Remember that your college experience can change if you take the right electives.
It would be a good idea to find a friend who can help you on less appealing classes. You might find it hard to study if you don’t like the topic, but a friend can motivate you to give your best.
A friend can also teach you some learning strategies that can make the classes you dislike less difficult. Having a friend who can help you on a challenging course can be a memorable part of your college experience.
Choosing a time of day that is best for you is another great way to deal with distasteful classes. Your college experience will teach you that you function better during certain hours. For instance, I avoided taking classes between the hours of one and therein the afternoon because I usually become drowsy during that time of day.
I decided to engage in activities like aerobics or swimming to give myself an afternoon life. Your college experience will teach you many things including learning a little bit about yourself.
